Paras ystäväni Italo

Uskokaa tai älkää, mutta paras ystäväni Torino di Sangron kylässä on maailman suloisin 84-vuotias Italo! Vierailen Italon ja hänen vaimonsa Lilianen luona käytännössä joka ilta, kun käyn koirien kanssa iltalenkillä. Italon ja Lilianen talo, terassi ja piha ovat aina täynnä elämää ja vierailijoita.

Joskus ryöstämme ystäväni kanssa itsellemme kahdenkeskisen jutteluhetken, jotka ovat minulle aarteita. Yhtenä niistä Italo kertoi minulle oman tarinansa:

 Italialaiseen tapaan tarina alkoi jo Italon vanhempien tarinasta. Italon isä meni naimisiin Torino di Sangrolaisen tytön kanssa vuonna 1925, mutta valitettavasti tyttö kuoli lapsivuoteeseen. Siihen aikaan oli tapana, että leskeksi jääneen olisi tullut viettää loppuelämänsä yksin leskenä. Onneksi isän appiukko oli poikkeuksellisen moderni ja patisti hänet uusiin naimisiin. Appiukon ehdotuksesta he menivät etsimään vaimoa ja kävivät ensin Roomassa, sitten L´Aquilassa orpokodissa katsomassa sopivia naimaikäisiä tyttöjä. Sopiva vaimoehdokas löytyikin ja hänestä tuli naimisiin menon jälkeen myöhemmin Italon äiti.

Vuonna 1923 syntyi ensin isosisko ja vuonna 1929 Italo. Isosisko nimettiin kuolleen vaimovainajan nimellä ja Italon toinen nimi Rocco tuli appiukolta. Lapset kasvatettiin rakastamaan appivanhempia kuin omia isovanhempiaan ja niin kävikin. Appivanhemmat olivat testamentanneet omaisuutensa Italolle ja tämän isosiskolle, joten he saivat kumpikin perinnöksi kaupunkitalot ja vielä maatilatkin.

Jo kuusivuotiaana Italosta tuli paikkakuntalaiseen tapaan soittaja. Hän aloitti mandoliinin soiton opettelulla, mutta jo kahdeksanvuotiaana hän siirtyi soittamaan saksofonia, mitä jatkoi myös siirtyessään ammattimuusikoksi Carabinieri-sotilasorkesteriin Roomaan. Siellä ja eri Euroopan maissa hän esiintyi orkesterin kera työkseen.

 Kun Italo oli 26-vuotias, hän esiintyi Rooman keskustassa viehättävässä pienessä kirkossa, josta puuttuu puolet katosta. Esitystä oli seuraamassa 17-vuotias Liliane ja nuoret rakastuivat. Mutta kohtalo oli määrännyt, että tytön tulisi matkustaa vanhempiensa kera Amerikkaan, jonne nämä olivat saaneet työluvan ja liput. Jäähyväiset olivat haikeat. Puoli vuotta myöhemmin alkoi orkesterissa kiertää huhu, että heillä olisi tulossa kiertue Amerikassa ja se toteutuikin vuotta myöhemmin. Kiertue kesti puoli vuotta ja sinä aikana Italo ja Liliane vihittiin.

Italo joutui palaamaan Italiaan ja haki lupaa muuttaa Amerikkaan. Kaksi pitkää vuotta odotettuaan hän lopulta pääsi nuorikkonsa luo suurin odotuksin. Elämä uudella mantereella oli kuitenkin vaikeampaa kuin Italiassa. Soittokeikkoja oli harvoin ja puuttuva kielitaito hankaloitti työnhakua, joten Italo joutui töihin paperitehtaaseen. Hän kesti tätä uraansa tasan kolme viikkoa, kunnes irtisanoi itsensä muutamalla oppimallaan englannin kielen sanalla. Oli pakko palata lapsuudessa opittuun ammattiin – parturiksi.

Vuotta myöhemmin Italo oli menestynyt niin hyvin, että hän lunasti parturiliikkeen itselleen ja samanaikaisesti opiskeli koko ajan kieltä lisää. Hän suoritti amerikkalaisen lukion, sitten collegen ja lopulta ylemmän yliopistotutkinnon. Sen jälkeen olivat vuorossa opettajaopinnot. Opettajan työssä Italo sitten teki uraa New Yorkin public schoolissa italian ja espanjan kielen opettajana. Hänet palkittiin Valkoisessa talossa presidentin erikoistilaisuudessa ansiokkaasta urasta kielitaidon edistäjänä. Bill Clinton luovutti henkilökohtaisesti hänelle Italian kodin seinällä olevan kiitosviestin.

Nyt eläkepäivinään Italo on tehnyt suuren työn kääntäessään englannista italiaksi työkaverinsa kirjaa italialaissankari Garibaldin elämästä. Anthony di Pernon Adventures of Garibaldi ilmestyy italiaksi jouluna 2013.

My best friend Italo
Believe it or not , but my best friend in the village of Torino di Sangro is the world's sweetest 84 -year-old Italo! I visit Italo and his wife Lilian practically every night when I go for a walk with the dogs. Italos´ and Lilianes´ house, terrace and garden are always full of life and visitors.
Sometimes my friends robs ourselves few minutes for bilateral casual conversation , which to me are the treasures. One  of these times Italo told me his story :
In Italian the way the story begans from Italos parents story. Italos´ father married a girl from  Torino di Sangro in 1925, but unfortunately the girl died in childbirth. At the time, it was customary that the widowed huspand would have to spend the rest of his life alone in a widow. Fortunately, the father in law was an exceptionally modern person and urged him to re-marry. By father-in-laws´ suggestion, they went to look for a wife, and became the first in Rome , then in L'Aquila, in the orphanage house watching suitable girl to marry. A suitable candidate was found and became a wife, and became later Italos´ mother .
In 1923, the big sister was born, and in 1929, Italo. Big Sister was named as the deceased wife of the deceased's name and the second name of Italo,  Rocco,  came from the father of law.  Children brought up to love their in-laws as their grandparents, and so it turned out. In-laws were giving all their property to Italo and his big sister after their death so they each received an inheritance town houses , and even on the farm.
As early as the age of six Italo started learning how to play the mandolin, but already at the age of eight, he moved to play the saxophone , which he also continued as a professional musician in Carabinieri military orchestra in Rome. There, and in various European countries , he appeared with the orchestra for a living.
When Italo was a 26-year-old, he appeared in the center of Rome in the charming little church, which lacks half of the roof. The presentation was attended by 17-year-old Liliane and these two young people fell in love. But fate had decreed that a girl should travel with her parents to America, where they had obtained a work permit and tickets. Farewells were melancholy. Six months later, inside the orchestra of Italos´ started to circulate the rumor that they would be coming to tour in America and it happened a year later. The tour lasted six months and during that time, Italo and Liliane were married.
Italo was forced to return to Italy, and applied for permission to emigrate to America. Two long years of waiting, and then he finally reached a young bride having some high expectations of a dreamland, America. Life in the New World , however, was more difficult than in Italy. Call gigs were rare and the lack of language skills hampered the search for employment, so the Italo was forced to work at the paper mill. He took this career exactly three weeks until resigned by a few self-learned English words. He had to go back to the profession, what was learned in childhood - being a Barber .
A year later, Italo was so successful that he purchased the barber shop for himself and at the same time he was studying the language more all the time. He completed an American high school, then college, and finally Master's degree. After that he applied for teachers education . Teachers work was Italos´main career in the New York public school; where he was the  Italian and Spanish language teacher. He was awarded bu the the President at the White House special occasion, distinguished career as a promoter of language skills. Bill Clinton handed over personally to him a certificate, which is hanging on the wall in their Italian home.
Now when having the pension days Italo has done a great job translating from English to Italian a book of Italian hero Garibaldi's life. Anthony di Pernos´ Adventures of Garibaldi appears on the Italian Christmas 2013.
